Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood is facing two additional sexual offence charges, bringing the total number of criminal charges against the longtime British hip-hop broadcaster to 17.
The Crown Prosecution Service announced the new charges on September 22 following an investigation by London’s Metropolitan Police. The additional allegations involve two women who were not included among the seven women connected to the original charges filed against Westwood in October 2025.
Westwood, 68, now faces allegations involving nine women and alleged incidents spanning more than three decades, from 1983 through 2016.
The newest charges are one count of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault. Westwood has not been convicted of any of the 17 charges, and the proceedings remain active.
Two More Women Added to the Case
According to the Metropolitan Police, the first new charge alleges that Westwood indecently assaulted a teenage girl, then 16 or 17 years old, in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham in 1991.
The second alleges that he sexually assaulted an 18-year-old woman in Wandsworth in May 2004.
The CPS said the two allegations are separate reports involving two additional women. Prosecutors authorized the charges after reviewing evidence submitted as part of the Metropolitan Police investigation.
Catherine P. Baccas, deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS London, said prosecutors determined there was sufficient evidence for the additional allegations to be brought before a court and that pursuing the charges was in the public interest.
The CPS also emphasized that the case is active and that Westwood is entitled to a fair trial, warning against commentary that could prejudice the proceedings.
Westwood Was Already Facing 15 Charges
Before the latest development, Westwood was already facing 15 sexual offence charges involving seven women.
Those charges consist of four counts of rape, nine counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault.
The Metropolitan Police announced the original charges in October 2025 following a lengthy investigation.
According to police, the earliest allegation dates to 1983, when Westwood is accused of indecently assaulting a 17-year-old girl in Fulham.
Another woman, who was in her 20s at the time, alleges that Westwood indecently assaulted her in Vauxhall in 1986.
A third woman alleges that she was raped and indecently assaulted in London between 1995 and 1996, when she was approximately 17 or 18 years old.
Another woman alleges that Westwood raped and indecently assaulted her between 2000 and 2001, also when she was approximately 17 or 18.
The remaining original charges involve allegations from 2010 and 2016, including alleged rapes and sexual assaults in London, Stroud and Finchley.
Westwood has denied the original charges.
The two newly authorized charges increase the overall case from 15 charges involving seven women to 17 charges involving nine women.
Allegations Now Span 33 Years
The timeline is one of the most notable aspects of the prosecution.
Taken together, the charges involve alleged conduct beginning in 1983 and continuing through 2016 — a period of approximately 33 years.
Some of the alleged incidents therefore date back more than four decades.
The CPS describes the allegations as “non-recent offences,” the terminology British prosecutors use for alleged sexual offences reported or prosecuted significantly after they are said to have occurred.
The newest allegations also fall inside the existing timeline rather than extending it.
The alleged 1991 indecent assault occurred between allegations already dating to 1986 and the mid-1990s, while the alleged 2004 sexual assault falls between previously charged allegations from 2000-01 and 2010.
Westwood Became One of Britain’s Most Recognizable Hip-Hop DJs
Westwood spent decades as one of the most prominent hip-hop broadcasters in the United Kingdom.
He joined BBC Radio 1 in the 1990s and became closely associated with the network’s hip-hop programming, interviewing major American and British artists while helping expose U.K. audiences to emerging rap music.
His lengthy career gave him unusual access to generations of hip-hop stars and made his interviews, freestyles and radio appearances familiar to rap audiences well beyond Britain.
Westwood ultimately left Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra in 2013.
Years later, allegations about his conduct became the subject of widespread public scrutiny and eventually a criminal investigation.
The criminal charges now before the courts are separate from previous media reports and investigations surrounding Westwood. The prosecution must prove each criminal charge through the judicial process.
Metropolitan Police Investigation Remains Active
The Metropolitan Police said its investigation is continuing even after the two newest charges.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said the women who reported allegations had placed their trust in investigators and that police remained committed to supporting them.
That continuing-investigation language is significant because the 17 charges announced so far do not necessarily mark the formal end of police work surrounding the case.
However, no additional criminal charges should be assumed unless prosecutors announce them.
The current confirmed total is 17.
A 2027 Trial Is Already Scheduled
The original 15 charges are already moving toward trial.
According to the Metropolitan Police, proceedings relating to those charges are scheduled to begin at Southwark Crown Court on January 25, 2027.
The two newest charges have entered the court process separately.
Westwood is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on a date that has not yet been fixed in connection with the 1991 and 2004 allegations.
How the additional charges will ultimately interact procedurally with the existing prosecution will be determined through the courts.
For now, the development substantially expands an already significant criminal case against one of the most recognizable figures in British hip-hop broadcasting.
Westwood was originally facing allegations from seven women.
That number is now nine.
The original 15 criminal charges have become 17: four rape charges, 10 indecent-assault charges and three sexual-assault charges when the two newly authorized counts are included.
The allegations remain allegations unless proved in court, and Westwood is entitled to the presumption of innocence as the proceedings continue.
His next appearance on the additional charges will be at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, while the trial involving the original 15 charges remains scheduled to begin in January.
