Kim Kardashian Says She Stayed Largely Single for Five Years After Ye Split

The reality star and SKIMS founder reflects on a long stretch of solitude since her high-profile divorce, focusing on her children, her businesses and her legal studies.

More than five years after she filed for divorce from Kanye West, now known as Ye, Kim Kardashian says she has spent most of that time single. She describes it as a deliberate period of rebuilding that was largely centered on her four children and her career.

Kardashian's comments offer a rare look at a stretch of her life that has been heavily covered by the tabloids. Her split from Ye, her short-lived romance with comedian Pete Davidson and her other rumored pairings kept her in the headlines. By her account, much of that period was quieter than the coverage suggested.

Editor's note: this article is built from the publicly documented timeline of Kardashian's divorce.

A Marriage That Played Out in Public

Kardashian and Ye married on May 24, 2014, in Florence, Italy, in a ceremony that drew worldwide attention. They had two children together before the wedding and two after: North, born in 2013, Saint in 2015, Chicago in 2018 and Psalm in 2019.

On Feb. 19, 2021, Kardashian filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences. The filing ended nearly seven years of marriage and a relationship that had shaped both of their public images.

The legal process was not quiet. In March 2022, a judge declared Kardashian legally single, which allowed her to restore her former name while the remaining issues were worked out. Disputes over custody, finances and public statements continued for months.

The divorce was finalized in November 2022. Under the settlement, Ye agreed to pay Kardashian $200,000 a month in child support. The two share joint custody of their children.

The Pete Davidson Chapter

Her best-known relationship after the split was with Pete Davidson. The two began spending time together in the fall of 2021, around the time Davidson hosted "Saturday Night Live" with Kardashian in a sketch. They were together for roughly nine months and separated in August 2022.

That relationship was widely covered, partly because of Ye's public reaction to it. It was one of the few relationships Kardashian confirmed publicly, which is part of why her description of the years since as largely single stands out.

Rumors Versus Reality

Since the split, gossip outlets have linked Kardashian to several public figures, including football star Odell Beckham Jr. and others. Most of these reports were never confirmed by Kardashian herself.

Her comments suggest that the volume of romance coverage did not match how she was actually living. Public speculation about her dating life remained intense even when, by her account, there was little to report.

Building Instead of Dating

Over the same period, Kardashian's professional life expanded. She grew the shapewear and apparel brand SKIMS into a company valued in the billions. She also continued to appear on Hulu's "The Kardashians," which has documented much of her post-divorce life.

She also pursued a legal career. Kardashian had been apprenticing in a California law office as part of a path to becoming a lawyer without attending law school. In December 2021, she announced that she had passed the "baby bar," the first-year law students' exam, after earlier attempts. She has continued to speak publicly about her legal ambitions and her work on criminal justice reform.

Co-Parenting Under a Spotlight

Raising four children with an ex-husband who often speaks publicly and unpredictably has been a recurring theme in her public comments. She has said that her children come first, and her schedule and priorities have reflected that.

Ye, for his part, married Bianca Censori in December 2022, shortly after the divorce was finalized. The contrast between his highly visible new chapter and Kardashian's quieter one has been a frequent topic of commentary.

What It Means

Kardashian's reflections reframe how many people may have read the past five years. What looked from the outside like a revolving door of romances was, she suggests, a period of independence, work and parenting.

Whether she plans to date more seriously now remains an open question. For the moment, she appears content to define this period on her own terms rather than through the speculation that has surrounded her.
