Leah Remini may officially have her diamond, but her move to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reportedly came much closer to falling apart than viewers initially knew.
The King of Queens star's negotiations to join Season 16 nearly collapsed just weeks before her deal was finalized, according to production sources cited by TMZ. Remini was already in the final stages of talks to become a full-time Housewife when negotiations encountered what the outlet described as “turbulence,” leaving producers concerned that the two sides might not reach an agreement.
Ultimately, they did.
Remini reportedly signed at the “11th hour,” securing her place on the show after the rest of the cast had already been filming for several weeks. Bravo subsequently confirmed Remini as a Season 16 addition, and Remini publicly acknowledged the casting news herself with a simple message: “It’s true.”
What Nearly Killed the Deal Remains Unknown
The most intriguing part of the negotiations is also the part that remains unclear.
TMZ's production sources did not disclose what caused talks to become difficult, only that the problem emerged during the final stages and became serious enough that producers worried Remini might not join the show at all. No reliable public reporting has established whether the disagreement concerned money, filming obligations, contractual language or another issue.
That makes the timing more significant. Production was not waiting for Remini before moving forward. By the time her contract was finalized, cameras had already been rolling with the other women, meaning the veteran actress would have to enter a season already in progress rather than beginning alongside the rest of the cast.
Bravo confirmed her casting Aug. 27, one day after Remini publicly confirmed reports that she was joining the franchise. The network highlighted her lengthy television career, including The King of Queens and Kevin Can Wait, as well as her extensive unscripted television experience.
The Los Angeles Times separately reported that Remini's team initially did not specify whether she would be appearing as a full-time Housewife, illustrating some of the uncertainty surrounding the precise nature of her role as news of the casting first emerged.
Remini Is Entering an Established Cast
Remini won't be the only new personality entering the Beverly Hills orbit.
Tracy Tutor, known for Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles, is also joining the Season 16 cast. Remini steps into a group that includes longtime Housewives Kyle Richards, Erika Jayne, Dorit Kemsley and Sutton Stracke, along with Bozoma Saint John and returning cast member Rachel Zoe.
For Bravo, Remini represents an unusually recognizable addition. She spent nearly a decade starring opposite Kevin James as Carrie Heffernan on The King of Queens, and her television career has extended well beyond scripted comedy.
She is also no stranger to reality television or Bravo. Remini has appeared numerous times on Watch What Happens Live and has previously discussed her personal life and departure from Scientology publicly.
Her outspoken personality is part of what makes the casting notable. Unlike an unknown newcomer who must establish herself with viewers, Remini enters RHOBH with decades of public history and an existing reputation for speaking openly about conflicts in her life.
Scientology Could Come Up, but It Wasn't Reported as the Contract Problem
One obvious question surrounding Remini's arrival is whether her long-running dispute with the Church of Scientology will become part of the show.
Remini left Scientology in 2013 after more than three decades in the organization and later became one of its most prominent public critics. She sued the Church of Scientology and its leader, David Miscavige, in 2023, alleging harassment and retaliation. Scientology has denied her allegations.
According to subsequent reporting from TMZ, there is nothing in Remini's RHOBH contract preventing her from discussing Scientology on camera if the subject arises. Sources connected to production also said producers had not received pushback from the church following her casting.
There is, however, no verified indication that Scientology had anything to do with the earlier difficulties in Remini's contract negotiations. Connecting the two without additional evidence would go beyond what has been reported.
The Deal Ultimately Came Together
Whatever happened behind the scenes, the negotiations ultimately ended with Remini joining the franchise rather than walking away.
Her late signing means viewers could see a somewhat different introduction than they would with a Housewife who had been present from the beginning of production. Instead of starting Season 16 alongside everyone else, Remini is entering a cast whose relationships and storylines have already begun developing in front of the cameras.
By Sept. 1, TMZ reported that Remini had begun filming, confirming that the last-minute negotiations had moved from contract discussions to an actual place in front of Bravo's cameras.
Only a few weeks earlier, producers reportedly weren't certain that would happen.
Remini's arrival on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is now official, but behind the announcement was a deal that apparently remained unsettled until nearly the final possible moment.
