California rapper Lefty Gunplay was arrested in Springfield, Missouri, early Saturday morning, less than 12 hours after taking the stage for a stop on his Did This For Me Tour.
The rapper, whose real name is Franklin Scott Holladay, was booked into the Greene County Jail at approximately 8 a.m. on Aug. 29 after being taken into custody by the Springfield Police Department. Jail records listed Holladay as being held for fourth-degree assault.
Exactly what allegedly happened remains unclear.
Authorities had not publicly released details about the incident surrounding the arrest, including who was allegedly involved or what circumstances led Springfield police to take Holladay into custody. Local outlet KY3 reported that although the jail roster listed fourth-degree assault, online court records did not show formal charges against the rapper as of Saturday night.
That distinction is important: an arrest and jail booking do not establish guilt, and the publicly available information at the time did not provide enough detail to characterize the alleged incident beyond what appeared in the jail record.
The timing of the arrest, however, came almost immediately after a major night on Lefty's touring schedule.
Lefty Performed in Springfield the Night Before
On Friday, Aug. 28, Lefty performed at The Regency Live in downtown Springfield as part of his Did This For Me Tour. The venue listed doors at 8 p.m. and the concert beginning at 9 p.m.
By approximately 8 a.m. the following morning, he was in police custody.
The arrest therefore came less than 12 hours after the scheduled start of his Springfield performance. TMZ, which first reported the arrest, said jail records showed Holladay was expected to be released Sunday morning.
The Springfield stop came as Lefty continues to capitalize on the biggest stretch of his rap career.
The Baldwin Park, California, rapper saw his national profile surge after appearing on Kendrick Lamar's “tv off,” from Lamar's GNX album. The song's success pushed Lefty's voice to a substantially larger audience and helped turn him from a regional West Coast name into an increasingly recognizable figure in mainstream hip-hop.
His involvement with the record also earned him Grammy recognition when “tv off” won Best Rap Song earlier this year.
That momentum carried into the Did This For Me Tour, with The Regency Live promoting the Springfield appearance around Lefty's rapid rise and his connection to Kendrick's hit.
Saturday morning brought a much different kind of attention.
As of the initial reports surrounding the arrest, Springfield police had not publicly explained the circumstances behind the alleged assault. That leaves several important questions unanswered, including where the alleged incident occurred, whether it was connected in any way to Friday night's concert, who else was allegedly involved and what conduct led to the fourth-degree assault designation.
Until authorities or court records provide those details, there is no basis to connect the alleged incident directly to the concert beyond the timing.
What is confirmed is that Lefty Gunplay performed in Springfield on Friday night and was booked into the Greene County Jail the following morning, with jail records listing fourth-degree assault.
For one of West Coast hip-hop's rapidly rising names, the arrest arrived in the middle of a national tour and only months after reaching a new career high through his work with Kendrick Lamar.
What allegedly happened during those hours after the show remains the unanswered part of the story.
