Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty on August 14, 2026. He said in court that he shot Brian Thompson in Manhattan and Thompson died. Two federal counts of interstate stalking resulting in death. No deal on the number. The government will ask for life in December. Within hours of that allocution, GiveSendGo still took money. Parade and TMZ put the campaign over $1.56 million after a roughly thousand-dollar bump the same afternoon. ThePrint’s later tally from the December 4 Legal Committee: more than $1.5 million from tens of thousands of donors, target $1.75 million, and a spokesperson saying support would continue until he is free. New York law limits the pot to legal fees. Leftover cash can be seized or steered toward restitution for the victim’s family. It is not walking-around money.
Brian Thompson was 50, a father, UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, killed on a Midtown sidewalk in December 2024. His family sat through the plea. They have asked for accountability in two courthouses. A defense fund is not a referendum that undoes that sidewalk. Supporters who call the shooting a protest against health-insurance systems are describing their politics. The plea described a killing. Those are not the same sentence.
Why the meter did not stop
Crowdfunding after a confession is how a certain internet treats a defendant as a cause. Forty-two thousand donors, if the committee’s count holds, did not need a trial to decide which side of the industry argument they were on. The committee’s “until he is free” line after a guilty plea is a political slogan attached to a legal PayPal. GiveSendGo told desks the page stays up because state charges and the federal sentence are still live. That is accurate bookkeeping. It is not a moral clearance.
State court: second-degree murder and weapons counts, double-jeopardy motion filed within an hour of the plea, September 8 trial date knocked into a December 10 appearance while prosecutors answer by October 9. Defense lawyers still have invoices. That is the only clean reason the fund exists. Using it to narrate the dead man as a symbol is the part that belongs in a comments section, not in a ledger caption.
What the money cannot buy
It cannot un-say the allocution. It cannot make stalking-resulting-in-death into a policy paper. It cannot decide Lauren Price or a premium increase. Kenneth Belkin, a New York defense lawyer not on the case, said the leftover problem is seizure and restitution. If the family ever sees a dollar from that pile, that will be the first useful thing the campaign did for anyone who was in the hotel doorway that morning.
Mangione is 28. He will be sentenced in December on a statute that allows life. He is still fighting New York. Donors are still fighting a system on a donation form. Thompson is still dead. The $1.56 million is real. The framing that treats a confessed killing as crowdsourced reform is a choice those donors made. The docket did not make it. Print the total. Print the plea. Print the widow’s courthouse. Do not print the slogan as if it were the verdict. The verdict in federal court is already guilty. The fund is just the bill.
