The quote is from Time, May 2026. Nicki Minaj, already calling herself Trump’s number one fan, laid out why she went public.
She said the music business treats Democratic loyalty like family law. She felt that way privately and did not say it because she knew the reaction. Then she listed the names.
Jay-Z first. Long feud. She has accused Roc Nation of trying to bury her catalog. In the interview she said lots of rappers do not like Jay-Z and were afraid to say it. She tied that to Obama. Jay-Z campaigned for him, got inducted into the Rock Hall by him. Minaj’s line: Jay-Z ended up costing Obama a lot, whether he knows it or not.
Obama himself is the other pillar. She pointed to a 2024 Harris rally speech that told Black men not to sit out a woman candidate. She said she watched videos of Black men saying the speech made them feel talked down to. That, plus the old expectation that Black stars default Democrat, is the party break she described.
The practical spark she named was California. Swatting calls on her L.A. house. She said she asked Gavin Newsom for a meeting and got nothing. “Completely ignored me, with all the money I pay in taxes.” She contrasted that with Republicans who took her calls, including Rep. Anna Paulina Luna.
She also doubled down on her 2021 vaccine comments and said watching how Trump was treated felt like her own smear cycle. Since coming out she said she has never felt happier or more herself.
That is her account. Obama’s office and Jay-Z did not have to answer a magazine profile for it to travel. The graphic is the blonde wig, the turtleneck, and a headline that compresses a long interview into two names. She put those two names on the record. The rest of the industry can agree, ignore, or keep the family rule she says she left.
