Akon’s signature crowd-surfing stunt took an unexpected turn in Kyrgyzstan when thousands of fans struggled to keep the singer and his giant inflatable ball above the crowd, forcing organizers to temporarily stop the music while security intervened.

The 53-year-old singer was performing Friday, September 18, at Bishkek Arena when he climbed inside a massive transparent inflatable ball, commonly known as a zorb, and attempted to travel across the fan zone on the hands of the audience.

It is a stunt Akon has performed before: rather than throwing himself directly into the crowd, the singer enters the transparent sphere and relies on fans to push the ball across the top of the audience.

This time, it didn't work as planned.

As Akon moved farther into the crowd, fans underneath the ball struggled to keep it elevated. The sphere began sinking into the densely packed audience, leaving Akon rolling increasingly close to — and at points effectively on top of — concertgoers.

Organizers stopped the music as security personnel rushed toward the area and worked to bring the ball back toward the stage.

Akon Started Sinking Into the Crowd

Video from the concert shows what initially appeared to be another elaborate crowd interaction quickly becoming difficult to control.

Akon remained inside the transparent sphere as it moved away from the stage, but the crowd's ability to support its weight deteriorated.

Instead of continuing to float above fans' heads, the ball descended.

Local outlet Open.kg reported that several women who were standing in the section where the ball landed said there were many female fans underneath it who had difficulty supporting the combined weight of the inflatable structure and Akon.

As the sphere sank, Akon began rolling across the tightly packed audience at a much lower level than intended.

The situation became serious enough that the music was temporarily stopped.

Security then moved into the crowd, regained control of the zorb and helped guide Akon back toward the stage.

Concerns Grew About the Packed Crowd

The problem wasn't simply whether Akon himself could safely get back to the stage.

The much larger concern was what the sinking ball could do to the people underneath and around it.

Local reports described fears that the commotion could develop into a dangerous crowd crush or stampede as people attempted to move away from the descending sphere. Security's intervention prevented the situation from escalating further.

There have been no reports of serious injuries resulting from the incident.

Once Akon was safely returned to the stage, he appeared largely unfazed.

Rather than ending his performance, the singer laughed about what had happened with the audience and continued the show.

More Than 40,000 People Attended the Concert

The stunt took place in front of one of the largest audiences to attend a concert in Bishkek this year.

Local reporting citing organizers said more than 40,000 spectators attended the September 18 show at Bishkek Arena. More than 2,500 police officers were deployed around the venue and surrounding areas to maintain security and public order during the massive event.

The concert was held as part of Vi Fest.

Akon and Ne-Yo were among the international stars appearing at the event. German rapper Nana also performed after Busta Rhymes, who had originally been advertised for the festival, did not appear.

The huge turnout created exactly the type of environment that can make a stunt like Akon's both visually impressive and potentially difficult to control.

Tens of thousands of fans packed into a stadium can carry an inflatable ball when the crowd is evenly distributed and prepared for it. But once the ball begins dropping, the situation can change quickly as the people underneath it suddenly have to deal with its weight while everyone surrounding them continues moving.

That appears to be what happened in Bishkek.

The Giant Ball Has Become Part of Akon’s Show

Akon's inflatable-ball stunt wasn't an improvised decision unique to Friday's performance.

The singer has used the transparent zorb at previous concerts as a way of getting physically closer to fans while remaining separated from them by the inflatable shell.

It creates one of the more unusual crowd-surfing visuals in live music: Akon essentially rolls over thousands of people while standing or moving around inside the ball.

At Bishkek Arena, however, the stunt demonstrated how much it depends on the audience.

Once fans could no longer keep the ball high enough, gravity took over.

The zorb dropped lower, people underneath struggled to support it, and security had to end the stunt.

The mishap quickly became one of the most widely shared moments from the concert, with footage circulating online after the show.

Akon Kept Performing

Despite the chaotic few moments, the concert itself continued.

Akon laughed after returning to the stage and resumed his performance rather than allowing the failed stunt to derail the night.

That reaction turned what could have become a much more serious incident into an unusual viral concert moment.

There is currently no indication that Akon was injured, and local reporting has not identified injuries among the fans involved.

But the video provides a reminder of how quickly elaborate crowd-participation stunts can become unpredictable.

The entire performance relies on thousands of people collectively doing what the stunt requires. If one section of the audience cannot keep up with the weight or movement, there is very little margin for error.

On Friday night in Kyrgyzstan, Akon's giant transparent ball stopped floating.

It sank directly into the crowd.

Security got him out, the music eventually resumed, and Akon laughed off the mishap before continuing the show — leaving behind a viral moment from a Bishkek concert attended by more than 40,000 fans.
