Armenia Is Building the World’s Largest Jesus Statue
Gagik Tsarukyan’s project. Mount Hatis, about 25 kilometers from Yerevan, 2,500 meters up. The figure is 33 meters — the traditional age — in aluminum, in three sections, sitting behind corrugated metal in Zovuni while the mountain gets a pedestal. Add 44 meters of base and the promoters count 77 meters. A visitor-center stack in some briefings pushes the whole complex toward 101. Christ the Redeemer in Rio is 30 meters of statue on an 8-meter pedestal. Liberty is 93 meters if you count the foundation the way New York likes to. Indonesia’s Jesus Christ the Savior took a 61-meter mark in 2024. Poland’s Christ the King in Świebodzin is the 33-meter twin that already lives on postcards — and is likely the finished white figure on the right of this graphic, not the fenced torso on the left.
Tsarukyan is a former arm-wrestler, party leader, zoo owner, one of the richest men in a small country. He announced the statue in 2022 as hope after the Karabakh years. Oldest official Christian state, AD 301, therefore biggest Jesus: that is his sentence. He has mentioned hoping Donald Trump would come to an opening. An unofficial U.S. embassy group visited the ridge, he said.
Permits moved. Foundations moved a few hundred meters after a fight with the original plot. Golos Armenii, this month, said final opening dates are still unknown even though the sculpture work is described as done and the install is “active.” TVP and planners have floated 2027. The lift is supposed to be by helicopter. Until the pieces leave the village they are a roadside attraction with a fence.
“World’s largest” is a category war: statue only, statue plus mound, statue plus building. Armenia is claiming the combined stack. Until the crane finishes, the record still belongs to whoever already poured the concrete. The left photo is the honest one — construction dirt, tin, a face taller than a house. The right photo is what the brochure wants you to think it already looks like.
A private monument on a public mountain will be a pilgrimage site, a cable-car pitch, hotels at the foot. It will also be an argument about oligarchs writing theology in aluminum. None of that changes the height if they put it up. All of it is why a statue that is still in thirds is already a headline.
