Cardi B Is the Face of Old Navy’s Fall 2026 “Most Wanted Denim.” On Instagram Live She Thanked the Store for Holding Her Down in High School — Because She Used to Steal the Cardigans.
August 12, 2026. Live, layered knits, no corporate minder in the shot. Belcalis Almanzar, 33, Bronx High School of the story she always tells, now the “Most Wanted” of a Gap Inc. mid-tier denim push that already had Paris Hilton in the “It’s Old Navy” series.
The confession, as Complex and Billboard typed it:
Thank you, Old Navy, for holding her down. In high school she used to steal from them all the time. Full-circle ambassador. She never got caught. If it were not for them she would not have been the freshest in school — she was the freshest — she was taking all the cardigans. Look at God.
That is the ad-lib. The campaign is the paid version: Wild West desert set, Extra High-Rise Wide Leg on her frame, Paloma Elsesser, Wisdom Kaye, Quenlin Blackwell, Brooks Nader, Haley Baylee in the rest of the fits, pieces USA Today put under $45 and Billboard closer to $50 depending on the wash. She has said the jeans problem out loud for years: 5'3", no waist, hips that do not match the mannequin, BBL math. Old Navy, she posted, has something for a body like that.
What “full circle” is doing
It is a joke with a receipt. Plenty of rappers do poverty cosplay for a luxury house. She did the opposite: named the aisle she walked out of without paying, then cashed the same logo. Brands usually kill that tape. Old Navy left it up, which means someone in marketing understood that “I stole your cardigans and now I own the billboard” is more on-brand than a focus-grouped gratitude paragraph.
She also said she never got caught. Treat that as her punchline, not a how-to. The Bronx teenager in that story is not a case file. The woman on the live is a mother who later went back to the same store in a hoodie to shop for her kids. Momtastic filed the undercover back-to-school run as the domestic sequel. Forever brand, she called it.
The only useful read
Shoplifting is still a crime when a sixteen-year-old does it. It is also a very old New York origin story, and she told it without asking for a medal. The interesting part is not the theft. It is that a publicly traded casual chain decided the woman who admitted the theft was the right person to sell $40 jeans to people who remember being broke in the same fluorescent light.
Cardi B has always been better at this than the polished version of a partnership. She will say Uganda-sized hips on a live and then sell the rise that pretends to solve it. She will say she stole the cardigan and then wear three of them on camera. Old Navy gets the clip. She gets the check and the last word. High school Cardi got the outfit. All three versions of her are in the same sentence, which is why the sentence worked. Never got caught, she said. Then she got hired. That is the circle.
