Claressa Shields is ready for Papoose to put a ring on it.
The undisputed boxing champion made her feelings about marriage unmistakably clear during a new appearance on Angela Yee’s Lip Service, revealing that after nearly two years with Papoose, she is waiting for the rapper to propose.
“Girl, I can’t wait till my man [proposes] to me,” Shields said while the group discussed engagements. “That’s what I’m waiting on.”
The conversation came during the September 22 episode of Lip Service, titled “Love Without a Guard,” where Shields spoke extensively about her relationship with Papoose, marriage, proposals, prenups, finances, jealousy and what she wants her future family life to look like.
And Shields apparently already has an idea of what she wants the moment to look like.
Rather than wanting Papoose to surprise her in the middle of a chaotic public event, Shields described something more intimate and peaceful — although she wouldn’t mind having an audience as long as the people around them actually matter to the couple.
She said she would want the week surrounding a proposal to be peaceful, somewhere “very, very nice,” with the actual proposal coming as a surprise and happening around loved ones.
A crowd is fine.
Strangers aren’t.
The comments are significant because Shields and Papoose have increasingly spoken about their relationship as something they see extending well beyond dating. Marriage, children and building a family together have all become part of their public conversations.
But there is still one major complication hanging over any potential engagement: Papoose remains legally married to Remy Ma.
Papoose and Remy Ma’s Marriage Remains Part of the Story
Papoose and Remy Ma’s breakup has unfolded publicly and, at times, bitterly.
The former couple were together for years and married in 2008, later holding a larger televised wedding ceremony. They share a daughter, Reminisce Mackenzie.
For years, Remy and Papoose were viewed as one of hip-hop’s more enduring couples. Papoose famously supported Remy during her years in prison, and their relationship became an important part of their public image after her release.
That picture changed dramatically as their marriage deteriorated.
By late 2024, what had largely existed as speculation about trouble between the two exploded into public accusations involving Shields and battle rapper Eazy the Block Captain.
Remy publicly accused Papoose and Shields of having a relationship behind her back. Papoose responded by accusing Remy of having her own relationship with Eazy.
Shields and Papoose eventually stopped treating their relationship as something that needed to remain hidden.
They began appearing publicly together, speaking openly about one another and eventually confirming what had become increasingly obvious: they were a couple.
Shields and Papoose have said they originally met on July 6, 2024, at the Shakur Stevenson-Artem Harutyunyan boxing event in Newark, New Jersey. Their relationship became public later that year amid the collapse of Papoose’s marriage to Remy.
Claressa and Remy’s Feud Hasn’t Exactly Disappeared
The situation did not become peaceful once Papoose and Shields went public.
Shields and Remy have repeatedly traded comments, accusations and insults, turning what might otherwise have remained a private relationship dispute into one of hip-hop’s most closely watched personal feuds.
That tension has continued into 2026.
Recent exchanges between the women have included disagreements over their past interactions and whether Shields previously attempted to establish a friendly relationship with Remy.
Papoose has also become musically involved in the dispute.
After Remy released “W.Y.F.L.” earlier this year, Papoose eventually responded with the diss record “Jezebel,” escalating a marital dispute that had already played out extensively across interviews and social media.
All of that makes Shields’ latest marriage comments particularly notable.
She’s not describing her relationship with Papoose as casual or temporary.
She’s openly waiting for the next step.
Shields Knows Exactly How She Wants the Proposal
During Lip Service, Shields didn’t simply say she wants to get married.
She essentially gave Papoose a blueprint.
She wants peace leading up to it.
She wants to be somewhere special.
She wants to be surprised.
And she wants people close to them there to witness it.
That last part separates her ideal proposal from a completely private engagement.
Shields said she would be comfortable with a crowd, provided it consisted of loved ones rather than random strangers.
Whether Papoose has already begun planning something is unknown.
Neither Shields nor Papoose announced an engagement during the interview, and Shields’ comments actually indicate that she is still waiting for one.
So despite the inevitable speculation surrounding her remarks, there is currently no publicly confirmed Papoose-Shields engagement.
Marriage Was Only Part of a Much Bigger Relationship Conversation
Shields’ Lip Service appearance went considerably deeper than the proposal comment.
The episode centered heavily on who Shields is outside boxing and how her relationship with Papoose has affected that side of her life.
According to the show’s official description, Shields discussed why their connection felt different from the beginning, along with trust, jealousy, sex, marriage, proposals, prenups, finances and how she has learned to embrace what she described as a softer side of herself after spending much of her life being strong for other people.
That personal evolution has become an increasingly visible part of Shields’ public persona.
For most of her career, the Flint, Michigan native has been known first for dominance.
She won Olympic gold medals in 2012 and 2016 before becoming a multi-division professional world champion. Her self-proclaimed “GWOAT” — Greatest Woman of All Time — nickname reflects the confidence that has defined her boxing career.
Her relationship with Papoose has exposed audiences to another part of her personality.
Shields has repeatedly talked about love, motherhood and family in interviews, subjects that now sit alongside boxing whenever she discusses what she wants from the next stage of her life.
Children Are Already Part of Their Conversations
Marriage isn’t the only major life step Shields has publicly discussed with Papoose.
She has previously talked about the couple wanting a child together.
That means the proposal conversation isn’t happening in isolation. Shields has increasingly described a long-term future involving Papoose rather than simply discussing their current relationship.
During the latest Lip Service appearance, the conversation also turned toward what a blended family could eventually look like.
Shields acknowledged that there are unresolved matters between Papoose and Remy but indicated she isn’t interested in forcing relationships or stressing herself over circumstances outside her control.
She also made clear that she trusts Papoose as a father and expects him to continue being present for his children.
That is particularly relevant because Papoose and Remy share a young daughter, while Papoose also has older children.
Any marriage between Shields and Papoose would therefore involve more than the two celebrities themselves.
It would combine families whose lives have already been affected by an unusually public breakup.
First Comes the Divorce
There is still an obvious practical obstacle before Papoose can marry Shields.
His marriage to Remy has to legally end.
Being separated from a spouse and being legally divorced are not the same thing. Whatever the emotional status of Papoose and Remy’s relationship may be, their unresolved legal marriage remains relevant when Shields publicly discusses becoming his wife.
Shields herself acknowledged during the Lip Service conversation that there is still a legal process involving Papoose and Remy that needs to be resolved.
She indicated that she isn’t trying to force what happens afterward with the family dynamic and isn’t going to stress herself over it.
That makes her proposal comment less of an engagement announcement and more of a declaration of where she wants the relationship to go.
She wants Papoose to propose.
She wants marriage.
And she isn’t being subtle about it.
Their Relationship Has Survived an Extremely Public Beginning
The circumstances surrounding Shields and Papoose’s relationship could have made maintaining it publicly difficult.
Their romance became known in the middle of accusations of infidelity, screenshots, social-media arguments and an increasingly hostile breakdown between Papoose and Remy.
Shields also found herself facing criticism from people who believed she had become involved in someone else’s marriage.
She and Papoose have pushed back on various claims about the timeline of their relationship, while Remy has publicly offered her own version of events.
Those disagreements remain contested.
What is no longer disputed is that Papoose and Shields are together.
Nearly two years after they say they first met, Shields is now comfortable enough with the relationship to openly discuss marriage, children, finances, prenups and what she wants an engagement to look like.
Shields Is Trying to Leave the Drama Behind
Interestingly, the proposal comments arrive while Shields says she is actively attempting to distance herself from negativity.
She has spoken about undergoing a 90-day “negativity cleanse,” an effort to stop engaging with some of the criticism and online conflict that has followed her.
That could be difficult given how closely her relationship with Papoose remains connected in the public eye to Remy.
Every development involving one side of the triangle tends to reignite discussion about the others.
A proposal would almost certainly do the same.
But Shields’ description of her ideal engagement suggests she wants the exact opposite atmosphere around the actual moment.
No drama.
No random spectators.
No chaos.
Just Papoose, a surprise and the people they love.
Now Papoose Knows What She’s Waiting For
Whether Papoose is ready to make that move remains his decision.
He has not publicly announced that a proposal is coming, and Shields did not claim during Lip Service that she knows when or where one will happen.
But there can be very little confusion about what she wants.
After Angela Yee’s engagement became part of the conversation, Shields immediately made her own hopes known.
“Girl, I can’t wait till my man [proposes] to me,” she said. “That’s what I’m waiting on.”
For a relationship that entered public view through accusations, screenshots and one of hip-hop’s messiest marital breakups, Shields is now talking openly about a very different chapter.
Marriage.
A blended family.
Children.
And, before any of that happens, one question from Papoose that Claressa Shields appears more than ready to answer.
