Drake Posted a Degrassi Still of Jimmy Brooks Next to Goth Ashley and Caption-Wrote “This Shit Not New.” He Was Answering a Week of Pinkchyu Jokes With a 2000s Set Photo.
August 12, 2026. Instagram Story. Teen Aubrey Graham in the wheelchair-era Degrassi: The Next Generation wardrobe, standing beside Ashley Kerwin — Melissa McIntyre — in the show’s goth chapter. Four words and a laugh emoji:
This shit not new.
Vice, Complex, Billboard, Ratings Game Music, Kurrco. The internet had spent four days deciding that barking for Pinkchyu on a Kick 20-v-1 was a personality reveal. He answered with Canadian basic cable.
What the picture is
Jimmy Brooks was the basketball kid who got shot, then became the kid who had to rebuild a life on campus. Ashley was the popular blonde who went black lipstick and combat boots after the show needed a left turn. They shared lockers and plot. That is not a dating history. It is a costume department. Drake used it as a receipt anyway: the goth girl was already in the frame when he was still collecting a CTV check.
A year earlier, on Bobbi Althoff’s show, he had already said the quiet part without a still. Destiny, he claimed, was a goth baddie with O-cups. Pinkchyu walked into a Stake anniversary stream looking like the punchline of that sentence, asked him to bark, won the “wife” chair, and collected a house-for-mom joke. The Degrassi Story is him saying the 2025 quote and the 2026 dare were not a rebrand. They were continuity.
Why fans treated a set photo like a deposition
Because Drake content now is a closed loop. He dates in public, the public assigns a type, he posts an artifact, the public assigns a thesis. Black women, goth women, basketball wives, whoever was in the last carousel — every post is entered as evidence in a trial nobody scheduled. The Degrassi shot is funny because it is cheap and because it works. You cannot fact-check a teenager’s call sheet against a Kick kink bit and get a sober conclusion. You can only admit he knew the assignment twenty years early.
Wiz Khalifa had already testified that he would have barked too. The throwback is the visual exhibit. Neither is a character reference. Both are how a 39-year-old with a catalog this large refuses to let a whimper become a scandal.
The only thing that is actually new
The cameras are better. The chat is meaner. Ashley Kerwin cannot comment from 2004. Pinkchyu can and did. Jimmy Brooks never had to buy anyone’s mother a house on a dare. Drake does bits now that Degrassi would have needed a very special episode to explain.
He did not discover eyeliner last Saturday. He stood next to it on a Toronto soundstage when the biggest thing in his life was a storyline. “Not new” is the most Drake caption possible: a shrug, a flex, and a dare to check the archives. The archives checked out. The memes continued anyway. That part is not new either.
