Jhené Aiko is finally returning with a new album.
After a six-year wait since the release of her Grammy-nominated Chilombo, the R&B singer announced Tuesday, Sept. 8, that her fourth studio album, Westside Whimsy, will arrive this Friday, Sept. 11.
And fans will not have to wait through a lengthy rollout.
Aiko revealed the album just three days before its scheduled release, sharing its cover art and full 20-song tracklist on social media.
“6 years in the making,” Aiko wrote. “Thank you for your patience.”
“‘Westside Whimsy’ out THIS FRIDAY.”
The announcement officially ends one of the longest gaps between albums of Aiko’s career and confirms a project she had quietly been teasing throughout 2026.
Six Years Since ‘Chilombo’
Aiko’s last studio album, Chilombo, arrived in March 2020 and became the biggest album of her career.
Named after Aiko’s surname, the project debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart.
It also earned three Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year and Best Progressive R&B Album, while “Lightning & Thunder,” featuring John Legend, was nominated for Best R&B Performance.
Aiko has continued releasing music and collaborating with other artists during the years since Chilombo, but she has not delivered another full-length solo studio album.
That changes Friday.
Westside Whimsy is officially her fourth studio album, following Souled Out, Trip and Chilombo.
Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul and More Join the Album
Aiko isn't returning alone.
The 20-track project features a heavily West Coast-oriented guest list that includes Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Tyga, Larry June and OHMA.
Kendrick appears on “So Good,” giving the album one of its most anticipated collaborations.
The two artists have history dating back more than a decade, including Kendrick’s appearance on Aiko’s “Stay Ready (What a Life)” from her 2013 Sail Out EP.
Ab-Soul appears on “Love Bomb,” while Tyga joins Aiko on “Like, Whatever.”
Larry June appears on “Neighbors,” and OHMA closes out the album alongside Aiko on “Golden Coast.”
The guest list reinforces the California identity behind the project.
A Love Letter to the West Coast
Aiko has described California as a major influence on Westside Whimsy.
Earlier this year, she explained that the album draws from the music she grew up hearing as well as the broader atmosphere of Southern California.
“I think that everything I do is rooted in where I’m from, what I grew up around, the people that I love, and the music I grew up listening to,” Aiko said while discussing the project.
She specifically pointed to ’90s rap, R&B and soul as influences, along with West Coast car culture, surfing, beaches and road trips.
Those influences are reflected throughout the album’s presentation.
The title itself had been floating around for months before Tuesday’s official announcement.
Aiko first teased Westside Whimsy through her Instagram Stories in January, sharing imagery associated with the project without initially providing a firm release date.
She later used the name for a limited-edition Erewhon smoothie collaboration, giving fans another clue that Westside Whimsy was developing into something larger.
By April, Aiko was openly discussing the music and its California influences.
Still, there was no official album release date.
Until now.
Jhené Gives Fans Just Three Days’ Notice
Rather than announcing the album months in advance, Aiko waited until release week.
The Tuesday announcement gives fans only three days between the official confirmation and the album’s Friday arrival.
That unusually short rollout has added to the excitement surrounding the project.
Fans had already spent years waiting for Aiko’s next full-length release, and instead of another extended teaser campaign, she effectively announced that the wait was almost over.
The album artwork shows Aiko in close-up against a teal background, with crystal-like tears running down her face.
Photographer Danny Williams, also known as Topshelf Junior, shot the cover.
The imagery fits the ethereal aesthetic that has become closely associated with Aiko throughout her career while introducing a new visual identity for the Westside Whimsy era.
Jhené Aiko Is Back
Six years is a long time between albums, particularly for an artist whose last project reached the upper tier of the Billboard 200 and competed for Album of the Year at the Grammys.
But Aiko has made it clear that Westside Whimsy wasn't created overnight.
She described the project as “six years in the making.”
Now the wait is almost over.
Twenty new tracks.
Features from Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Tyga, Larry June and OHMA.
And a project built around the West Coast culture and California landscape that shaped Aiko from the beginning.
After six years without a new studio album, Jhené Aiko officially returns Friday, Sept. 11, with Westside Whimsy.
