Nearly 13 years after Jhené Aiko first appeared on the Billboard 200, the Los Angeles R&B singer has finally reached the top.
Aiko’s fourth studio album, Westside Whimsy, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, giving her the first chart-topping album of her career and setting a new commercial peak for an artist who has spent more than a decade as one of contemporary R&B’s most recognizable voices.
The album earned 74,000 equivalent album units in the United States during the tracking week ending Sept. 17, according to Luminate figures reported by Billboard. Streaming powered nearly the entire debut: 70,000 units came from streaming-equivalent activity, representing 71.33 million official on-demand streams of the album’s songs. Another 3,500 units came from album sales, while 500 were track-equivalent units.
Those numbers place Westside Whimsy at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated Sept. 26. The album also opens at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Streaming Albums chart.
Jhené Finally Gets Her No. 1
The accomplishment ends a lengthy climb for Aiko, whose previous albums repeatedly brought her near the top of the Billboard 200 without reaching No. 1.
Her 2013 EP Sail Out peaked at No. 8, introducing a much larger audience to the atmospheric R&B sound that would become her signature. Her debut studio album, Souled Out, climbed to No. 3 in 2014, while 2017’s Trip reached No. 5.
Then came Chilombo.
Released in 2020, the album debuted at No. 2 and became Aiko’s highest-charting project at the time. It eventually earned Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Progressive R&B Album, further cementing her place among the genre’s leading artists.
But even Chilombo stopped one position short of the Billboard 200 summit.
Six years later, Westside Whimsy has taken her the rest of the way.
A Historic R&B Debut in 2026
Aiko’s No. 1 also carries a broader distinction.
Westside Whimsy is the first R&B album by a woman to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2026, according to Billboard. The last female R&B artist to occupy the top position was SZA, whose SOS returned for its 13th and final week at No. 1 in May 2025.
The only other R&B album to reach No. 1 so far in 2026 is Bruno Mars’ The Romantic, which topped the chart in March.
That makes Aiko’s achievement significant beyond her own discography. At a time when hip-hop, pop and country projects frequently dominate the upper reaches of the Billboard 200, an R&B album driven overwhelmingly by streaming has managed to take the biggest album position in the country.
And Aiko did it without a conventional months-long album rollout.
‘Westside Whimsy’ Arrived With Almost No Warning
Perhaps one of the most striking parts of the album’s debut is how quickly the campaign unfolded.
Aiko formally announced Westside Whimsy on Sept. 8.
Three days later, on Sept. 11, the entire 20-track album arrived.
That abbreviated rollout meant there was little time for the prolonged promotional cycle that often precedes a major-label album. Instead, listeners were essentially handed the project and allowed to discover it almost immediately.
The strategy worked.
Within its first tracking week, songs from the album generated more than 71 million official on-demand streams in the United States.
Physical editions weren't responsible for pushing the album over the top, either. Billboard reported that Westside Whimsy was available only as a digital purchase during its opening week, with physical versions expected later.
Its 3,500 album sales therefore represented only a small fraction of the 74,000-unit total.
Streaming did the heavy lifting.
Kendrick Lamar Leads a West Coast Guest List
Aiko also surrounded herself with a group of collaborators closely connected to the West Coast.
Kendrick Lamar appears on “So Good,” while Ab-Soul joins Aiko on “Love Bomb.” Tyga appears on “Like, Whatever,” Larry June guests on “Neighbors,” and OHMA appears on the closing track, “Golden Coast.”
The guest list complements the album’s Southern California identity rather than overwhelming it.
Aiko remains at the center of the 20-song project, using the album to explore relationships, heartbreak, boundaries, healing and the emotional contradictions that have long defined her songwriting.
It also reconnects her with artists who occupy different corners of the California music landscape, particularly Lamar and Ab-Soul.
For Aiko, those relationships stretch back well before Westside Whimsy.
Six Years Since ‘Chilombo’
The No. 1 debut also marks Aiko’s return after an unusually long gap between solo studio albums.
Chilombo arrived in March 2020.
The album became one of the defining releases of Aiko’s career, producing records including “B.S.” with H.E.R. and “None of Your Concern” with Big Sean. It eventually went platinum and received major Grammy recognition.
But another Jhené Aiko studio album did not immediately follow.
Instead, six years passed before Westside Whimsy arrived on Sept. 11, 2026.
That makes the commercial response to the new project particularly notable. A six-year absence did not prevent Aiko from returning to a streaming environment that has changed dramatically since her last album and immediately posting the highest Billboard 200 position of her career.
She didn't merely return to the top five.
She returned at No. 1.
Streaming Made the Difference
The numbers also illustrate how dramatically the album business has shifted during Aiko’s career.
Of Westside Whimsy’s 74,000 first-week equivalent units, approximately 95% came from streaming-equivalent activity.
The album’s 71.33 million official on-demand streams translated into 70,000 streaming-equivalent album units. Traditional album sales contributed 3,500, while track-equivalent units added another 500.
That streaming performance also sent the project directly to No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Streaming Albums chart.
For an R&B artist whose appeal has long centered on listeners spending time inside complete projects rather than simply chasing individual pop singles, that type of consumption is particularly meaningful.
Listeners didn't need physical copies or elaborate deluxe packages to push Aiko to No. 1.
They streamed the music.
Aiko Celebrates With Her Fans
After the chart results arrived, Aiko kept her reaction characteristically simple.
“Thank you for listening,” she wrote while sharing a graphic celebrating the album’s performance.
She then added another message to her supporters in the comments: “What’s mine is ours.”
The sentiment is fitting for a milestone that took considerably longer than a typical breakout No. 1.
Aiko did not arrive at the top of the Billboard 200 with her first major album. She built toward it across more than a decade of releases.
Sail Out reached No. 8.
Souled Out reached No. 3.
Trip reached No. 5.
Chilombo reached No. 2.
Now Westside Whimsy is No. 1.
For Jhené Aiko, the climb is finally complete.
Thirteen years after beginning her run on the Billboard 200, she has the one chart position that had remained missing from her résumé — and she reached it with an album that arrived with only three days of advance notice.
Westside Whimsy isn't simply another successful release in Aiko’s catalog.
It is officially the first No. 1 album of her career.
