The first time the championship has landed on the calendar’s most commercially sentimental Sunday. Wikipedia and the host-committee handoff both print the date without a hedge. It is also Presidents’ Day weekend. Roses and a three-day travel window in the same sentence. The NFL did not pick the romance. The 17-game season and the longer playoff tree pushed the finale later than the old early-February habit. The holiday came along for the ride.

SoFi has done this. Super Bowl LVI in 2022, Rams at home, ninth Greater Los Angeles Super Bowl when LXI kicks, second at this building. December 2023 award. Hollywood Park around it. Two tenants, Rams and Chargers, neither guaranteed a ticket. Roger Goodell’s line at the handoff was backyard confidence: two clubs, NFL Network, 2028 Olympic flag football in the same metro. The building does not care which conference wins January.

Television is the other first

ABC has not had the Super Bowl since XL in 2006. ESPN has never had it. LXI is planned as the first ESPN Super Bowl, simulcast on ABC, Univision in Spanish, Manningcast on ESPN2, streams on ESPN Unlimited and NFL+. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman are the listed booth in the public grid, Lisa Salters and Laura Rutledge on the sideline. Kick listed around 6:30 p.m. Eastern on future-site explainers. That is a Disney night with a football attached. The commercials will cost what Super Bowl commercials cost. The date will give every ad a pun whether the brand wants one or not.

What Valentine’s Day does to a Super Bowl

Hotels that already price-gouge will add a prix fixe. Florists in Inglewood will have a weekend. Couples who treat the game as a date will discover that 70,000 people had the same idea. The league will sell the coincidence until it is exhausted, then sell the game. There is no bye-week poetry in a schedule math problem. There is a lot of red in the graphic package.

Players will still be playing a football game. The trophy will still be metal. February 14 will still be February 14 for people who are not in Section 214. The novelty is real and thin. No Super Bowl had to share the day with a greeting-card industry before. After LXI, the next time the dates line up someone will call it tradition.

Tickets are already a resale market, because they always are two winters out. The field is still grass under a roof that is not quite a roof. The story that matters in 2027 will be who has the ball at the two-minute warning. Until then the story is a calendar. First Valentine’s Day Super Bowl. SoFi. ABC and ESPN. Seventeen games in the regular season is why the roses and the Lombardi show up on the same Sunday. That is the whole trick. The rest is kickoff.
