Claressa Shields Says She Avoids Sex for Six Weeks During Training Camp

She said it on Club Shay Shay. Shannon Sharpe’s show, late November 2025. The clip did the rest of the work through 2026 — Cam Newton’s show, Phoneheads, every boxing account that needed a headline with an emoji.

Her version, not a trainer’s pamphlet:

She stays away for six weeks before the fight. Sex makes her feel relaxed and calm. When a pit bull is on you, you want to run. It takes something out of the legs. She feels stronger not doing it.

On the later sit-downs she added the rest of the locker-room theory as she lives it: climax is energy leaving the building; the energy has to go to the craft; for her it reads as stronger, more aggressive, more on the bar. Then the part the podcasts loved: camp-moody. Extremely moody. Irritated. Hungry. Everything moves too slow. That is why she trains three or four times a day — so the pace has somewhere to go besides civilians in line at the store.

Papoose, talking on Let The Sparkz Fly in early 2026, described the house version of the same rule. You can’t eat like a civilian. Damn sure can’t have sex. He wakes up and she is already gone, running. After the club, running again. Discipline is the relationship’s second job.

This is not a randomized trial

Boxing has told this story in men’s gyms for a century — legs, edge, don’t get happy before the bell. Sports science is messier: some data on short-term hormones, almost nothing that proves six weeks of abstinence is why a champion wins a decision in Detroit. Shields is not publishing a paper. She is describing a switch she flipped after 2012, when a coach, in the circulating version of the origin story, saw a sluggish spar and named the night before. She kept the rule because the record kept moving.

The record is the only reason the quote is news. Two Olympic golds as an amateur. Professionally 19–0 after the August 15, 2026 TKO of Kaye Scott in Atlanta for WBA and WBC middleweight belts. Undisputed at 154, twice at 160, undisputed heavyweight into 2026, Crews-Dezurn rematch a 100–90 sweep at Little Caesars. First woman to clear a million-dollar purse in the sport. Twenty major world titles across five classes is the Wikipedia stack, not a vibe.

What the graphic is doing

A fighter in a sports-bra smile next to a costumed side-eye is how the internet packages a sex quote. The useful sentence does not need the costume. She chose a six-week dry stretch as part of camp, she says it makes her sharp and mean, she says it also makes her impossible in a grocery line, and she keeps winning. Partners who live with that calendar signed up for roadwork at dawn.

If the next opponent wants to treat it as psychology, that is their problem. If a comment section wants to treat it as a commandment for amateurs, that is how gym folklore spreads. Shields’s version is narrower: her body, her camp, her belts. The pit bull line is the one that will outlive the emoji. She would rather keep the spring in the legs than feel calm. The judges have not asked her to change it.
